North Star Township previously formed part of Normanna Township. Citizens who were interested in having a local Fire Department founded North Star in 1985. A 6-mile-by-6-mile area within the Cloquet River Valley, the Township now supports an active Fire and Emergency Response Department, a road, recycling, and government services, such as elections.
North Star Township is in a rural area of forests, lakes and streams. Part of the township falls within the Cloquet Valley State Forest. Outdoor recreation is plentiful, including hiking, fishing, hunting, swimming, snowmobiling, snowshoeing, offtrack skiing, biking and more.
MEDIACOM BROADBAND OPPORTUNITY
Mediacom’s project to bring a “fiber to the premise” network to North Star, Pequaywan, and part of Ault along with the “Unorganized Township between North Star and Pequaywan” was selected for funding by the MN Office of Broadband Development. Mediacom was awarded funds to bring fiber optic network to North Star. Once the permitting process has cleared, they will begin their build in the township.

The 2027 Town Levy passed at the 2026 Annual Meeting was:
General: $35,000
Roads & Bridges: $8,500
Fire EMS: $26,000
Buildings: $10,000
The total levy for 2027 is $79,500.

The town board of North Star Township, St. Louis County, Minnesota holds its regularly scheduled board meetings on the third Tuesday of each month at 6:00 PM at the town hall located at 7700 Pequaywan Lake Road, Duluth, MN 55803. If a meeting cannot be held as scheduled because it conflicts with a holiday or another day in which a meeting cannot be held, the meeting will be held the following week on the same day of the week, time, and place.
